Everyone loves Fair Isle garments. They're beautiful and colorful, and when made with real Shetland wool, they're also durable. There are many patterns at Ravelry (some assembled here for you to use!) utilizing Shetland wools. However, it can be intimidating (especially when just using the internet) to substitute colors for knitting Fair Isle. The demands of different patterns mean that there is no simple way to just choose colors. At Fairlight Fibers, we're always delighted to work with you if you need help selecting your colors, but we'd also like to provide a bit of inspiration. Read on! Most Fair Isle knitting...

While fine lace shawls are also associated with the Shetland Islands, it is the humble Hap that I think of most often when I think of Shetland shawls. Traditionally, Haps were knitted with a construction technique that began with a central square, usually knitted back and forth. From there, a border was knitted in the round, encompassing the middle square. This method of construction is still associated with most Shetland lace shawls and the more...

There are many sock patterns on the internet, and I know how hard it is to choose the right pattern for your feet and be sure they'll fit. That's why I love this Infinitely Adjustable Sock Pattern. This pattern, if made exactly as written, will fit most women's feet. Because the foot and leg are ribbed, they will stretch to hug skinny ankles or wider calves. I have made them in medium for myself, and for my teenage son, just by knitting the foot on his socks a bit longer. These pretty yellow socks are made in Cedar House Yarns' Sapling...

About a month ago, we asked a select group of Ravelry and r/knitting group users to knit up something from one of our lovely yarns for us to use as "shop" samples. Ravelry user eightyeightkate chose to make this gorgeous cowl using the Cornflower Cowl pattern and less than 1 skein of Blacker Tamar Lustre DK in Gannel. Isn't it gorgeous? We love the pretty cables, and the Tamar Lustre really shows them off while retaining a "fuzzy" look. Tamar Lustre is made from the wool of heirloom long-fiber breeds, so it has a soft-yet-crisp appearance that's unique among the yarns we carry....
